The Domaine took shape in 2005 when Maurice Ecard retired. Michel Ecard, Maurice’s son grew up between the rows of vines and the barrels within the family estate. ln his own right decided to start from scratch by creating his own estate with his wife, Joanna. Some will lend them a press, others a shed and above all, most friends supported and believe in them.
Established in 2004, Domaine Michel Ecard vinified its first vintage in 2005. By stroke of luck or fate, it was a superb year and a very good omen for Michel and Joanna. Today, the duo watches over 4 hectares exclusively in Savigny-lès-Beaune, including five premiers crus. The secret of their success? Clear and assumed choices from the start: triple sorting at harvest time, 100% destemming, aging without new barrels, no filtering or fining, gentle bottling by gravity.
Result? The wines are always open and easy to drink, which does not detract from their elegance and the finesse of their structure. Faithful and respectful of its terroir, Domaine Michel Ecard is today a sure value of the Savigny-lès-Beaune appellation. Their 1er Cru Les Serpentiéres has vines that are up to 90 years old. Yields naturally decline at this age. Harvesting is always done by hand. Total to partial destemming, in years that it is possible, and remarkably little sulphites throughout the process. Bottling is done without prior filtration.
